Houston is a swim-pond town for dogs. Its biggest off-leash parks — Millie Bush and Bill Archer out in the Harris County reserves, and even downtown’s Johnny Steele — are built around real ponds where dogs swim, complete with entry ramps and dog-wash stations to rinse off after. The catch is the water and the weather: the ponds are untreated and can turn murky or algae-prone in the Gulf Coast heat, and a Houston summer is brutally hot and humid. So pick the right park (not all of them have swim water), go at dawn or dusk, and rinse your dog down. Here are the best fenced off-leash parks in town, with which ones actually let dogs swim, each verified against the official source.
