The Best Dog Parks & Beaches in Atlanta

Atlanta has eight officially designated off-leash parks plus standouts in the suburbs — but the city trips people up two ways. Some of the most famous green spaces (Candler Park, the open lawns of Freedom Park) are leash-only; the legal off-leash spot is the specific fenced dog park, not the whole park. And a few favorites have catches — Decatur’s Oakhurst is residents-only with a permit, and the buzzy Fetch parks are private, paid dog-bars, not public parks. The real gem is Mason Mill, where a creek runs right through the fence so dogs can actually swim — rare in a metro that bakes in summer humidity. Here are the spots worth the trip, with the rules that apply, each verified against the official source.

Atlanta dog parks & beaches: FAQ

Where can dogs go off-leash in Atlanta?
The City of Atlanta designates eight official off-leash dog parks — the best-known are Piedmont Park Dog Park (Midtown) and Freedom Barkway (Old Fourth Ward), both fenced and free. In the suburbs, Dunwoody’s Brook Run, DeKalb’s Mason Mill (with a swim creek), and Johns Creek’s Newtown Dream are all excellent. Note that the rest of Freedom Park, and Candler Park, are leash-only — the legal off-leash spot is the specific fenced dog park.
Is Candler Park off-leash?
No. Despite a lot of informal off-leash use, Candler Park is not on the City of Atlanta’s official list of off-leash parks, and the city enforces the leash law there. For legal off-leash time nearby, use Freedom Barkway or Piedmont Park’s dog park.
Where can my dog swim off-leash near Atlanta?
Mason Mill Dog Park in DeKalb County has a creek running right through the fenced area where dogs can wade and swim — rare for a metro dog park, and a great option on hot, humid days. Most other Atlanta dog parks have water and splash features but no natural swim water.
Are the Fetch Park locations public dog parks?
No — Fetch Park (Old Fourth Ward and Buckhead) is a private, paid dog-park-and-bar. You need a day pass (about $10–$15) or a membership, and dogs must be spayed/neutered and current on vaccinations. They’re well-run and heat-managed, but they’re not free public parks like the city dog parks.
Where can my dog be off-leash right now?
Open the live map — each spot shows whether off-leash is allowed at the current date and time, including maintenance windows and the residents-only and paid spots.
Can I add a spot?
Yes — open the live map, drop a pin, snap a photo, and it’s on the map for every dog owner.
