The Best Dog Parks & Beaches in Charleston

Charleston is a dog-beach town, but the rules run on a clock and a calendar. Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island let dogs off-leash on the sand only in the morning windows — early hours in summer, more generous in the off-season — while famous Folly Beach is actually leash-only with a summer midday dog ban (a common surprise). For a real swim, James Island County Park has a managed pond where dogs paddle off-leash (small park admission). Add downtown’s morning/evening off-leash area and a couple of fenced city parks, and mind the Lowcountry heat. Here are the verified spots, with the exact off-leash hours, each checked against the official source.

Charleston dog parks & beaches: FAQ

When can dogs be off-leash on Charleston beaches?
On Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island, off-leash is allowed only in morning windows that shift by season. Isle of Palms: 5–9 AM in summer (Apr 1–Sep 14) and a long overnight window (4 PM–10 AM) in the off-season. Sullivan’s Island: 5–10 AM in summer (with a 10 AM–6 PM dog ban) and the more generous 5 AM–noon daily in winter. Outside those windows dogs must be leashed. Both islands require a local dog license.
Is Folly Beach off-leash?
No — this surprises a lot of people. Folly Beach is leash-only; there’s no off-leash provision at all. On top of that, dogs are banned from the beach entirely from 10 AM to 6 PM, May 1 through September 30, and are never allowed on the Folly Beach Pier. For off-leash beach time, head to Isle of Palms or Sullivan’s Island in their morning windows.
Where can my dog swim off-leash in Charleston?
The Dog Park at James Island County Park has a big managed pond where dogs swim and play off-leash, with a dog-wash station to rinse off after — it’s the metro’s standout dog-swim spot. It costs $2 per person to enter the county park. The ocean beaches (Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s) also allow off-leash water play during their morning windows.
Are Charleston dog parks free?
The city dog parks (Hazel Parker downtown, Governor’s Park on Daniel Island, S. Adgers Wharf) and the island beaches are free. The two Charleston County dog parks — James Island (swim pond) and Wannamaker (Splash Paw fountain) — charge $2 per person park admission, which includes dog-park access.
Where can my dog be off-leash right now?
Open the live map — each spot shows whether off-leash is allowed at the current date and time. For the beaches, the live answer reflects the summer morning windows; off-season hours are more generous.
Can I add a spot?
