The Best Dog Parks & Beaches in Boise

Boise takes off-leash dogs seriously — and the rules vary a lot by park, so it pays to know which is which. The marquee spot is the Dog Island at Ann Morrison, a 5.4-acre area ringed by a pond where dogs swim. Some parks are fully fenced and open all day; others are unfenced areas that go off-leash only on mornings and evenings; and a few (including the rest of Ann Morrison) open to off-leash dogs only in winter. There’s no sanctioned Boise River dog-swim spot, so the pond is the water. With high-desert summer heat and cold, muddy winters, timing matters. Here are the verified spots, with the exact rules and the live “off-leash right now?” answer, each checked against the official source.

Boise dog parks & beaches: FAQ

Where can my dog swim off-leash in Boise?
The Dog Island at Ann Morrison Park is the spot — a 5.4-acre off-leash area ringed by a pond where dogs swim and play, open year-round (the rest of Ann Morrison opens to off-leash dogs only in winter). Note the pond is lowered in winter, so swimming is a warm-season activity. There’s no sanctioned Boise River dog-swim spot — the river-adjacent areas are leash-only — so the pond is the only swim water.
Why are some Boise off-leash areas only open certain hours?
Several of Boise’s off-leash areas are unfenced fields where off-leash is allowed only in the cooler, lower-traffic windows — sunrise to 10 AM and 4 PM to sunset (Manitou, Castle Hills and similar) — and dogs must be leashed the rest of the day. Because they’re unfenced, your dog needs reliable recall. The fenced parks (Military Reserve, Morris Hill, McDevitt, Meridian’s Storey Bark Park) are off-leash all day.
Which Boise parks are off-leash only in winter?
Boise runs a seasonal program where the whole of Ann Morrison Park goes off-leash from November 1 through the end of February (sunrise to sunset). The Optimist Youth Sports Complex opens off-leash in two windows — winter (Nov 1–end Feb) and early summer (Jun 1–Aug 20) — and bans pets entirely the rest of the year. Always check the date window before you go; the live map does it for you.
Are Boise dog parks open in winter?
Yes — the fenced parks stay open year-round (sunrise to sunset), and winter is actually when the big seasonal programs (Ann Morrison, Optimist) open up. Plan for cold and mud, and note that seasonal water fountains (Morris Hill) and the Dog Island pond are shut down or lowered in the cold months.
Where can my dog be off-leash right now?
Open the live map — each spot shows whether off-leash is allowed at the current date and time, including the morning/evening windows and the winter-only programs.
Can I add a spot?
Yes — open the live map, drop a pin, snap a photo, and it’s on the map for every dog owner.
