Birmingham’s off-leash options are free, fenced city dog parks spread across the metro — the first, Greensprings at George Ward Park, opened in 2009, and the suburbs (Hoover, Vestavia Hills, Mountain Brook, Trussville) have added their own since. Two things to know: there’s no sanctioned off-leash dog swim here (the popular Heardmont and Railroad parks are leash-only, and the Cahaba River spots are for drinking, not swimming), and shade is scarce at most of them. With Alabama heat and humidity, that makes timing the main safety factor. Here are the verified spots, with the rules that apply, each checked against the official source.
