The Best Dog Parks & Beaches in San Francisco

San Francisco is a dog city to its bones — from the legendary off-leash beaches and bluffs of the GGNRA to the designated Dog Play Areas tucked into city parks. But the rules vary by site, and the famous coastal spots carry federal protections (snowy plovers, habitat closures) you can be cited for crossing. Here are the spots worth the trip, with the off-leash rules that actually apply — each verified against the official source.

San Francisco dog parks & beaches: FAQ

Which San Francisco beaches are off-leash?
Fort Funston, Baker Beach (north of Lobos Creek), and most of Ocean Beach and Crissy Field are off-leash under voice control — all GGNRA land governed by the National Park Service. Watch for the protected zones: the Ocean Beach snowy plover area and the Crissy Field wildlife area are on-leash July 1–May 15.
What is a Dog Play Area?
A Dog Play Area (DPA) is San Francisco Rec & Park’s official off-leash zone inside a city park — like Corona Heights, Alamo Square, Mission Dolores, Bernal Hill and McLaren. Dogs are off-leash only within the designated DPA (5 AM–midnight); leash up elsewhere in the park.
