Off-leash beach · Outer Sunset / Richmond · Ocean Beach, Great Highway, San Francisco, CA 94121
Ocean Beach
A miles-long stretch of Pacific shoreline where dogs run off-leash under voice control along most of the beach. The southern end is protected snowy plover habitat with a seasonal leash rule.
Free parking along the Great Highway and side streets; lots near Sloat Blvd and Lincoln Way.
Good to know
Off-leash voice control is allowed EXCEPT in the Snowy Plover Protection Area (Stairwell 21 south to Sloat Blvd), where dogs must be leashed July 1–May 15 (off-leash there only May 15–July 1).
Strong rip currents and sneaker waves — not a safe swimming beach; keep dogs out of the surf.
The leash rule is federal (36 CFR 7.97(d)), enforceable by NPS rangers with citations.
