The Best Dog Parks & Beaches in Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City is one of the better metros for a swimming dog — but with catches. PAW OK at the Lake Hefner Duck Pond is the famous dog-swim park, with a roped-off beach where dogs wade and swim, though it went members-only in 2019 (key fob and a donor fee). Edmond’s Bickham-Rudkin also has a swim pond and it’s free — but it periodically closes for toxic blue-green algae, so check before you let your dog in. Everywhere else is a dry fenced park. With Oklahoma’s summer heat and strong wind, and limited shade at most parks, timing matters. Here are the verified spots, with the rules and the water facts, each checked against the official source.

Oklahoma City dog parks & beaches: FAQ

Where can my dog swim off-leash in Oklahoma City?
Two spots have dog-swim ponds. PAW OK at the Lake Hefner Duck Pond is the famous one — a roped-off beach where dogs swim — but it’s members-only (about $10/month or $100/year plus a key fob). Edmond’s Bickham-Rudkin Dog Park also has a swim pond and is free, but it periodically closes for toxic blue-green algae, so check conditions first. Everywhere else (including Scissortail Lake) is no-swim — the other parks have drinking fountains only.
Is PAW OK still free?
No — PAW OK (the Paw Park at the Duck Pond) went members-only on July 1, 2019. You now need a paid membership (about $10/month or $100/year) and a key fob to enter, and dogs must be spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccinations including Bordetella. The free public dog parks in the metro are Edmond’s Bickham-Rudkin, Norman’s two parks, Moore’s Happy Tails, and OKC’s Scissortail and Midtown Mutts.
When is it too hot for an Oklahoma City dog park?
Oklahoma summers routinely hit 95–100°F with strong wind, and most of these parks have limited shade. Go early morning or evening, bring water, and watch artificial turf (Midtown Mutts) for hot surfaces that can burn paws. The swim ponds at PAW OK and Edmond are the best heat relief — just heed Edmond’s algae closures.
Do any Oklahoma City dog parks close for maintenance?
Moore’s Happy Tails Dog Park closes Wednesdays 9 AM–noon for maintenance, and Edmond’s Bickham-Rudkin pond closes intermittently for blue-green algae treatment. Norman’s Griffin Park has also closed periodically for entrance construction. Check the spot before you head out.
Where can my dog be off-leash right now?
Open the live map — each spot shows whether off-leash is allowed at the current date and time, and flags the members-only PAW OK versus the free parks.
Can I add a spot?
Yes — open the live map, drop a pin, snap a photo, and it’s on the map for every dog owner.
