The Best Dog Parks & Beaches in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a sprawling dog town — from the original, famous off-leash parks in the canyons and the Valley to Runyon’s celebrity-packed trails. But the rules trip people up: most LA off-leash play happens inside fenced city dog parks, the hillsides are off-leash in designated areas only, and there is exactly ONE legal off-leash ocean beach in the county (it’s in Long Beach). Here are the spots worth the trip, with the off-leash rules that actually apply — each verified against the official source.

Los Angeles dog parks & beaches: FAQ

Where can dogs go off-leash in Los Angeles?
Most LA off-leash play is inside fenced city dog parks — Laurel Canyon, Sepulveda Basin, Griffith Park, Silverlake, Whitnall, Westminster, Barrington and Hermon are all free, fenced and off-leash all day. Runyon Canyon is off-leash in its designated trail areas. The only legal off-leash ocean beach in LA County is Rosie’s Dog Beach in Long Beach.
Is there an off-leash dog beach in Los Angeles?
Yes — but only one. Rosie’s Dog Beach in Long Beach is the sole legal off-leash ocean beach in LA County. Dogs are off-leash only inside the marked Dog Zone (Granada Ave to Roycroft Ave) and only during beach hours, 6 AM–8 PM. The rest of the LA-area coastline is off-limits to dogs. (Huntington Dog Beach is also off-leash but it’s in Orange County, not LA.)
Is Runyon Canyon off-leash?
Yes, in the designated areas. LA Parks allows dogs off-leash "in designated areas only" — it’s zone-restricted, not time-restricted, so there are no special off-leash hours. Dogs must be leashed in the parking area and the marked leashed-only entrances, and there’s no water on the trails, so bring your own.
Are the LA dog parks fenced, and are they free?
Yes — every City of LA off-leash dog park (Laurel Canyon, Sepulveda Basin, Griffith Park, Silverlake, Whitnall, Westminster, Barrington, Hermon) is fully fenced and free. Most have separate large- and small-dog areas, and each closes one weekday morning for maintenance, so check the spot before you go.
Where can my dog be off-leash right now?
Open the live map — each spot shows whether off-leash is allowed at the current date and time, including beach hours and maintenance windows.
Can I add a spot?
Yes — open the live map, drop a pin, snap a photo, and it’s on the map for every dog owner.
