The Best Dog Parks & Beaches in Sacramento

Sacramento’s off-leash scene is all fenced dog parks — and one big myth to bust: the American River Parkway, despite the water, is leash-only, so there’s no legal off-leash river swim in the area. What you do get is a solid spread of free, fenced neighborhood parks, most with separate large- and small-dog yards. The thing that actually decides your visit is heat: Central Valley summers routinely hit 95–105°F, and shade is thin at many of these parks, so early morning or evening is the move. Here are the best fenced off-leash parks across Sacramento, Roseville, Folsom and Davis, with the rules that apply, each verified against the official source.

Sacramento dog parks & beaches: FAQ

Can my dog go off-leash on the American River Parkway?
No. Despite the river and the miles of trail, Sacramento County Code 9.36.061 requires dogs to be leashed (6 ft max) throughout the American River Parkway and all county regional parks — there’s no designated off-leash area and no legal off-leash river swim. For off-leash time, use one of the fenced city dog parks instead.
Where can dogs go off-leash in Sacramento?
In fenced city dog parks: Granite Regional, Howe Community Park (Howe ’Bout Arden), Tanzanite, Partner Park, Bannon Creek and North Natomas Regional Park are the main Sacramento ones. Nearby, Roseville’s Bear Dog Park (Mahany), Folsom’s FIDO Field and Davis’s Toad Hollow are all official and fenced. Most split large and small dogs into separate yards.
When is it too hot for a Sacramento dog park?
Central Valley summers routinely hit 95–105°F from June through September, and shade is limited at many of these parks. Midday is the danger zone — go at dawn or in the evening, bring water, and test the ground for heat. North Natomas Regional Park’s fire-hydrant spray feature and the rinse stations at some parks help cool dogs down.
Do any Sacramento-area dog parks close for maintenance?
Yes — Folsom’s FIDO Field is closed all day Wednesday, and Davis’s Toad Hollow closes Mondays 6–10 AM and may close around heavy winter rain. Check the spot before you go.
Where can my dog be off-leash right now?
Open the live map — each spot shows whether off-leash is allowed at the current date and time. In summer, factor in the heat regardless of the posted hours.
Can I add a spot?
Yes — open the live map, drop a pin, snap a photo, and it’s on the map for every dog owner.
