The Best Dog Parks & Beaches in New York City

New York is a surprisingly great off-leash dog city — if you know the clock. The famous rule: in Central Park, Prospect Park and 100-plus others, dogs run leash-free only during off-leash hours — early morning until 9 AM, and again from 9 PM until the park closes. Show up at noon and it’s a leash and a ticket. The other half of the city’s off-leash life is its fenced dog runs — Tompkins Square, Washington Square and the rest — which are leash-free all day. Here are the spots worth the trip, with the exact hours and rules that apply, each verified against the official source — and a live map that tells you, right now, whether your dog can be off-leash.

New York City dog parks & beaches: FAQ

When can dogs be off-leash in NYC parks?
In Central Park, Prospect Park, Riverside, Fort Tryon, Forest Park, Van Cortlandt and 100-plus other parks, dogs may be off-leash only during designated off-leash hours: from when the park opens until 9 AM, and from 9 PM until the park closes (with the citywide default hours, that’s 6–9 AM and 9 PM–1 AM). Between 9 AM and 9 PM every dog must be on a leash of 6 ft or shorter. Fenced dog runs are the exception — they’re off-leash all day.
Which NYC dog runs are off-leash all day?
The fenced dog runs: Tompkins Square Dog Run (the city’s oldest, in the East Village), the two Washington Square Park runs, the Leroy Street run in Hudson River Park, and Jemmy’s Run in Madison Square Park are all fully fenced and off-leash any time the park is open — no morning/evening window.
Is there an off-leash dog beach in New York City?
Yes — Prospect Park’s Dog Beach, a shallow shoreline on the Lake near the Lullwater in Brooklyn, where dogs can wade and swim during off-leash hours (6–9 AM and 9 PM–1 AM). The water drops off deep quickly, so supervise closely.
Do I need a license to let my dog off-leash in NYC?
Yes. New York City requires all dogs to be licensed, and you should carry proof of the license and current rabies vaccination. Off-leash privileges apply only in designated areas and only during the posted off-leash hours.
Where can my dog be off-leash right now?
Open the live map — each spot shows whether off-leash is allowed at the current date and time, including the morning and late-night off-leash windows.
Can I add a spot?
Yes — open the live map, drop a pin, snap a photo, and it’s on the map for every dog owner.
