The Best Dog Parks & Beaches in New Orleans

New Orleans has surprisingly few sanctioned off-leash parks — its first official one (Wisner) only opened in 2013 — so a lot of the spots locals use are informal and technically leash-only. The big destination is NOLA City Bark in City Park, but it’s paid and keycard-gated with strict health requirements; Metairie’s Lafreniere is paid too, while Wisner and the Crescent Park run are free. Don’t plan on swimming: the Mississippi is fast and industrial, the park lagoons are leash-only, and Gulf-South gators and water quality rule out the rest. With brutal subtropical heat and humidity, timing matters most. Here are the verified spots, with the rules that actually apply, each checked against the official source.

New Orleans dog parks & beaches: FAQ

Where can dogs go off-leash in New Orleans?
The metro has only a handful of officially sanctioned off-leash parks. The big one is NOLA City Bark in City Park (paid, keycard-gated). Free options are the Wisner Playground Dog Run Uptown (the city’s first, opened 2013) and the Crescent Park Dog Run in Bywater. In the suburbs, Metairie’s Lafreniere Bark Park is the main option (paid permit). Many popular spots like Markey Park, Cabrini Playground and Coliseum Square are actually leash-only despite informal off-leash use.
How much does NOLA City Bark cost?
NOLA City Bark requires a paid permit and keycard: $85/year for one dog, $125 for two, $150 for three, or a $25 two-week temporary permit (Friends of City Park members save $5). Dogs must be over 6 months, spayed/neutered, heartworm-negative and current on rabies, DHLPP and bordetella; children under 8 are never allowed inside. Keycards are picked up on weekdays, so apply ahead.
Can my dog swim off-leash in New Orleans?
No — there’s no sanctioned off-leash dog swim in the metro. The Mississippi River (which borders Crescent Park) is fast and industrial, the park lagoons (like Lafreniere’s) are leashed loops, and Gulf-South alligators and water quality make open water risky. NOLA City Bark has a summer splash area and Lafreniere has a dog-wash station, but those are for cooling and cleaning, not swimming.
When is it too hot for a New Orleans dog park?
Subtropical heat and humidity from May through September are the dominant safety factor here — midday is genuinely dangerous. Go early morning or evening, bring water, use the shade pavilions (City Bark) and water features, and watch closely for overheating.
Where can my dog be off-leash right now?
Open the live map — each spot shows whether off-leash is allowed at the current date and time, and flags the paid versus free parks.
Can I add a spot?
Yes — open the live map, drop a pin, snap a photo, and it’s on the map for every dog owner.
