The Best Dog Parks & Beaches in Miami

Miami is a leash-first town, so the off-leash rules trip people up. There is exactly ONE official off-leash ocean dog beach in the county — Haulover — and only on a marked stretch from 8 AM to 4 PM. Everywhere else, off-leash means a fenced “Bark Park,” of which the county and city run a handful of good ones. Two things catch owners out: most Miami Beach sand bans dogs entirely, and Miami-Dade County dog parks don’t allow pit bulls. Add the heat — sand and pavement can burn paws by midday — and timing matters. Here are the spots worth the trip, with the rules that actually apply, each verified against the official source.

Miami dog parks & beaches: FAQ

Is there an off-leash dog beach in Miami?
Yes — but only one. Haulover Park Dog Beach (near Bal Harbour) is Miami-Dade’s only official off-leash ocean beach. Dogs are off-leash only on the marked stretch between lifeguard towers #2 and #3, and only 8 AM–4 PM; they must be leashed everywhere else in the park. Limit two dogs per person, no puppies under 6 months.
Can my dog go on Miami Beach?
Mostly no. The City of Miami Beach prohibits dogs on its public beaches, with only narrow exceptions: the North Beach and South Beach “Bark Beach” zones, which are designated, leashed, and open only during short seasonal windows on certain days. For genuine off-leash beach time, Haulover (in unincorporated Miami-Dade) is the spot.
What are the rules at Miami-Dade County dog parks?
The county’s fenced bark parks (Haulover, Tropical, Amelia Earhart, East Greynolds) require a current rabies tag and up-to-date vaccinations, bar pit bulls under county rules, and don’t allow puppies under 4 months. Most have separate large- and small-dog sections.
Can my dog swim at Amelia Earhart Park?
Don’t count on it. Despite popular “dog lake” claims, the official Miami-Dade page lists no dog-swimming area at Amelia Earhart — the park’s lakes serve the cable-wakeboard complex, not the bark park. The bark park is a fenced, dry off-leash run.
Where can my dog be off-leash right now?
Open the live map — each spot shows whether off-leash is allowed at the current date and time, including the Haulover dog-beach hours.
Can I add a spot?
Yes — open the live map, drop a pin, snap a photo, and it’s on the map for every dog owner.
