The Best Dog Parks & Beaches in Louisville

Louisville runs its off-leash parks on a single membership system, and it’s the thing to know before you go: every official dog run — the five Metro Parks runs, the state park’s Sawyer Dog Park, and the Barklands in the Parklands of Floyds Fork — requires a Louisville Dog Run Association permit and gate key fob (about $50 a year for your first dog), plus a Metro pet license and current vaccinations. There are essentially no free walk-in off-leash parks here, and no sanctioned dog swimming (the Ohio River and Floyds Fork are off-limits). All the runs are fully fenced, most with a separate small-dog side. Here are the verified spots, with the rules that actually apply, each checked against the official source.

Louisville dog parks & beaches: FAQ

Do I need a membership for Louisville dog parks?
Yes — and this is the key thing about Louisville. Every official off-leash dog run requires a Louisville Dog Run Association (LDRA) membership: a paid annual permit (about $50 for your first dog) plus a gate key fob, a current Louisville Metro pet license and proof of rabies/distemper/parvo vaccinations. This applies to all five Metro Parks runs (Cochran Hill/Cherokee, Champions, Vettiner, Old Louisville/Toonerville, Waverly), the state park’s Sawyer Dog Park, and the Barklands in the Parklands of Floyds Fork. There are essentially no free walk-in off-leash parks in Louisville.
Can my dog swim off-leash in Louisville?
No — there’s no sanctioned off-leash dog swim in the metro. The runs near water (Champions by the Ohio River, the Barklands by Floyds Fork) are fenced grass dog parks, not river access, and dogs must be leashed everywhere outside the runs. Bring drinking water; the runs’ fountains are shut off in winter.
Which Louisville dog park is the biggest?
Sawyer Dog Park at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park is the largest at about 6 acres (three two-acre areas), followed by Champions (~3.6 acres) and the Barklands (~3 acres). Most are split into separate large- and small-dog sides; Waverly is the exception — a single undivided area.
When is it too hot for a Louisville dog park?
Kentucky summers are hot and humid, and most runs have limited shade and no swim water. Go early morning or evening, bring water, and use the shaded spots (Sawyer’s gazebos are a plus). Remember the runs’ water fountains are turned off in winter.
Where can my dog be off-leash right now?
Open the live map — each spot shows whether off-leash is allowed at the current date and time. Note every Louisville run requires an LDRA membership and key fob to enter.
Can I add a spot?
Yes — open the live map, drop a pin, snap a photo, and it’s on the map for every dog owner.
