The Best Dog Parks & Beaches in Detroit

Metro Detroit has a deep bench of dog parks, but most of the good ones are pay-to-play: the suburbs (Royal Oak, Ferndale, Sterling Heights, Novi, Troy) run membership parks with annual passes, key-fobs and even online safety courses, and the Huron-Clinton Metroparks require a vehicle entry pass. The free walk-ins are Detroit’s own two — Corktown (with Michigan Central Station as a backdrop) and Palmer Park. The swim standout is Troy’s Daisy Knight, which has a fenced pond where dogs actually swim. And a heads-up the listings get wrong: Novi’s Lakeshore Park is leash-only and bans dogs from its beach. Here are the verified spots, with the rules and the catches, each checked against the official source.

Detroit dog parks & beaches: FAQ

Where can my dog go off-leash for free in Detroit?
Detroit’s two city dog parks are free walk-ins with no registration: the Detroit Dog Park in Corktown (with Michigan Central Station as a backdrop) and the Palmer Park Dog Park. Most suburban parks (Royal Oak, Ferndale, Sterling Heights, Novi, Troy) require a paid membership and key-fob, and the Huron-Clinton Metroparks require a vehicle entry pass.
Which Detroit-area dog parks need a membership?
Most of the suburban ones: Royal Oak’s Mark Twain ($40/65/yr), Ferndale’s Wilson Park (membership + key-fob + online safety course), Sterling Heights (annual pass), Novi ($30/60/yr key-fob + online course), and Troy’s Daisy Knight ($35/45/yr via the Alta Open app). Bring proof of license and current vaccinations to register.
Where can my dog swim near Detroit?
Troy’s Daisy Knight Dog Park has a fenced pond where dogs actually swim — the metro’s standout dog-swim spot (membership required). Lower Huron Metropark’s new dog area has splash/cooling pools, but those aren’t a natural swim. Note that the Metropark beaches (Stony Creek’s Baypoint/Eastwood, etc.) ban dogs, so the lakes themselves aren’t dog-swim spots.
Are Detroit dog parks open in winter?
Yes — they’re open year-round, but plan for Michigan winter: turf and gravel surfaces get muddy in thaw and snow-packed in deep winter, and seasonal water features (hydration stations, Daisy Knight’s pond, Lower Huron’s splash pools) are shut off in the cold months.
Where can my dog be off-leash right now?
Open the live map — each spot shows whether off-leash is allowed at the current date and time, and flags the free city parks versus the membership and vehicle-pass parks.
Can I add a spot?
Yes — open the live map, drop a pin, snap a photo, and it’s on the map for every dog owner.
