The Best Dog Parks & Beaches in Tacoma

Tacoma and the South Sound have a deep set of off-leash parks, including some genuinely big ones — Fort Steilacoom’s 22 fenced acres and Gig Harbor’s fenced wooded trail parks let dogs really run. For swimming, there’s exactly one sanctioned spot: the off-leash dog beach at Chambers Creek (Chambers Bay), where dogs get into the Puget Sound saltwater. A couple of common myths to clear up: Fort Steilacoom’s Waughop Lake is leash-only (no dog swim), and Point Defiance’s off-leash area is a forested bluff with no water access. Expect Pacific Northwest mud in the rainy months. Here are the verified spots, with the rules that apply, each checked against the official source.

Tacoma dog parks & beaches: FAQ

Where can my dog swim off-leash in the Tacoma area?
The one sanctioned spot is the off-leash dog beach at Chambers Creek Regional Park (Chambers Bay) in University Place — south of the railroad overpass, where dogs can get into the Puget Sound saltwater. It’s off-leash but unfenced and tidal, so check the tide charts (parts disappear at high tide), and stay 100 yards from any seals or sea lions. Most other Sound beaches in the metro are leash-only.
Can my dog swim at Fort Steilacoom or Point Defiance?
No. Fort Steilacoom’s Waughop Lake is leash-only and not a dog-swim spot — the 22-acre off-leash area there is dry. Point Defiance’s off-leash area is a forested bluff above the Sound with no beach or water access. Both are great for running, but bring drinking water; for swimming, head to Chambers Creek.
Which Tacoma-area dog park is the biggest?
Fort Steilacoom in Lakewood, at about 22 fenced acres, is the South Sound’s premier off-leash destination. Gig Harbor’s PenMet parks are also large — Rotary Bark Park has ~15 acres with over a mile of fenced wooded trails, and Tubby’s Trail covers ~8.5 acres with size-separated meadows.
Are Tacoma dog parks open year-round?
Yes, but plan for Pacific Northwest weather — the grass and forested surfaces get muddy and soggy from roughly October through April, so bring a towel. The Metro Parks Tacoma parks run a half-hour before dawn to a half-hour after dusk; Puyallup and Gig Harbor parks have fixed clock hours (check the spot).
Where can my dog be off-leash right now?
Open the live map — each spot shows whether off-leash is allowed at the current date and time.
Can I add a spot?
Yes — open the live map, drop a pin, snap a photo, and it’s on the map for every dog owner.
