The Best Dog Parks & Beaches in San Antonio

San Antonio keeps it simple but strict: dogs must be leashed everywhere in public except inside the city’s fenced dog parks, where they can run free — off-leash anywhere else can bring a fine. The crown jewel is Phil Hardberger Park, which has two separate dog parks (east and west) linked for walkers by the landmark Tobin land bridge over the highway. Don’t expect swimming — even the parks beside Olmos and Salado creeks keep dogs out of the water — and do plan around brutal Hill Country summer heat. Here are the best fenced off-leash parks in town, with the rules that actually apply, each verified against the official source.

San Antonio dog parks & beaches: FAQ

Where can dogs go off-leash in San Antonio?
San Antonio is leash-strict — dogs may be off-leash only inside the city’s fenced dog parks; off-leash anywhere else in public can bring a fine. The best-known are the two at Phil Hardberger Park (east and west), McAllister Park, downtown’s Madison Square, Pearsall, Tom Slick, Olmos Basin and Lady Bird Johnson. All are free and fully fenced.
Why does Phil Hardberger Park have two dog parks?
Hardberger Park is split by NW Military Highway into an east side (off Blanco Rd) and a west side (off NW Military Hwy), each with its own fenced dog park. There’s no car connection between them, but the landmark Robert L.B. Tobin Land Bridge lets people and leashed dogs cross between the two sides over the highway.
Can my dog swim at a San Antonio dog park?
No. Every off-leash facility in San Antonio is a fenced, dry dog park. Some sit near water — Olmos Basin has Olmos Creek and Lady Bird Johnson borders the Salado Creek greenway — but those aren’t sanctioned dog-swim areas, and dogs must be leashed outside the dog-park fence. Bring water; the on-site fountains are the only water.
When is it too hot for a San Antonio dog park?
Texas Hill Country heat is intense midday from roughly May through September, and the more exposed parks (Pearsall, Tom Slick, Madison Square) bake. Go early morning or evening, bring water, and test the ground for heat. Olmos Basin is the shadiest option if you must go when it’s warm.
Where can my dog be off-leash right now?
Open the live map — each spot shows whether off-leash is allowed at the current date and time.
Can I add a spot?
Yes — open the live map, drop a pin, snap a photo, and it’s on the map for every dog owner.
