The Best Dog Parks & Beaches in Portland

Portland has 36 designated off-leash areas, and one rule decides your visit: fenced areas are off-leash all day (open 5 AM–midnight), while unfenced areas are off-leash only during the hours posted on-site. Several riverfront spots add Willamette swimming. Here are the best off-leash areas in town, with the rules that actually apply — each verified against Portland Parks. When in doubt at an unfenced area, read the sign before you unclip.

Portland dog parks & beaches: FAQ

Are Portland off-leash areas open all day?
It depends on fencing. Portland’s FENCED off-leash areas (The Fields, Normandale, Gabriel, Chimney) are off-leash all park hours, 5 AM–midnight. UNFENCED areas (Cathedral, Sellwood, Laurelhurst, Wallace, and partly-fenced Mt. Tabor) are off-leash only during the hours posted on-site — always check the sign.
Which Portland off-leash areas have water for swimming?
Cathedral Park and Sellwood Riverfront Park sit on the Willamette River with dog water access (mind the toxic-algae advisories in summer). Gabriel’s creek and Laurelhurst’s Firwood Lake are wildlife habitat, not dog-swim spots.
Where can my dog be off-leash right now?
Open the live map — each spot shows whether off-leash is allowed at the current date and time, including the unfenced areas’ posted-hours rule.
Can I add a spot?
Yes — open the live map, drop a pin, snap a photo, and it’s on the map for every dog owner.
