The Best Dog Parks & Beaches in Memphis

Memphis has one of the best off-leash dog areas in the entire country — Shelby Farms Park’s “Outback,” 100-plus unfenced acres of fields and trails with ponds where dogs actually swim. It’s been voted the nation’s best dog park, but it’s unfenced and multi-use, so your dog needs solid recall. The rest of the metro is fenced city and suburban dog parks — most free, with Germantown’s Forgey the main paid exception. The constant here is the heat: Tennessee summers are hot and humid, so bring water (the Outback’s ponds help dogs cool off). Here are the verified spots, with the rules that apply, each checked against the official source.

Memphis dog parks & beaches: FAQ

Where can my dog swim off-leash in Memphis?
Shelby Farms Park’s Outback is the spot — 100+ acres of off-leash fields and trails with several ponds where dogs actually swim, plus a rinse station. It’s one of the largest off-leash dog areas in the country and has been voted the best in the U.S. Just note it’s unfenced and multi-use (shared with cyclists, runners, horses and anglers), so your dog needs reliable recall. None of the metro’s other dog parks have dog-swim water.
Are Memphis dog parks free?
Mostly. The Shelby Farms Outback, Overton Bark, Tobey, Mud Island (all City of Memphis / conservancy), plus Collierville’s Suggs Park and the Bartlett dog park are free. The main paid exception is Germantown’s Forgey Dog Park, which requires a Pooch Pass ($40 resident / $60 non-resident for the first dog).
Which Memphis dog park is best for a small or reactive dog?
The fenced parks with separate small-dog yards — Overton Bark, Tobey (≤25 lb side), Mud Island, Germantown’s Forgey (under-20-lb side), Collierville’s Suggs, and Bartlett (which even has a puppy area). The Outback is huge and unfenced, so it’s better suited to confident dogs with solid recall.
When is it too hot for a Memphis dog park?
Tennessee summers are hot and humid, so midday is rough — go early or in the evening, bring water, and watch for overheating. The Shelby Farms Outback ponds and Tobey’s summer wading pools help dogs cool off, but the open, less-shaded parks (Mud Island, Bartlett) get intense.
Where can my dog be off-leash right now?
Open the live map — each spot shows whether off-leash is allowed at the current date and time, and flags the unfenced Outback and the paid Germantown park.
Can I add a spot?
Yes — open the live map, drop a pin, snap a photo, and it’s on the map for every dog owner.
