The Best Dog Parks & Beaches in Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids and its suburbs run a solid set of fenced off-leash parks. The City of Grand Rapids has Hillcrest near Midtown, Covell on the west side, and a small downtown Westside lot; East Grand Rapids adds Remington by Reeds Lake, and the wider metro brings Wyoming’s membership park, Byron Township’s Whistlestop, and the standout — Ottawa County’s 21-acre Grand Ravines, one of the largest fenced dog parks in West Michigan. A note on swimming: there isn’t a sanctioned dog-swim spot here yet. Kent County’s Millennium Park bans dogs from its beach, and the new Wahlfield Park swim pond was still under construction as of this writing. Plan for Michigan winters — seasonal water shut off, snow-packed and muddy surfaces. Here are the verified spots, each rule checked against the official source.

Grand Rapids dog parks & beaches: FAQ

Where can dogs go off-leash in Grand Rapids?
In fenced dog parks. The City of Grand Rapids runs Hillcrest near Midtown, Covell on the west side, and a small downtown Westside lot; East Grand Rapids has Remington by Reeds Lake. The wider metro adds Wyoming’s membership park, Byron Township’s Whistlestop, and Ottawa County’s 21-acre Grand Ravines — one of the largest fenced dog parks in West Michigan.
Can my dog swim at a Grand Rapids dog park?
Not yet. Kent County’s Millennium Park bans dogs from its beach, and the planned Wahlfield Park dog swim pond was still under construction as of this writing. Grand Ravines fronts the Grand River, but dogs must stay inside the fenced park. There’s no sanctioned dog-swim spot in the metro right now.
Do I need a membership for any Grand Rapids dog park?
Yes — the Wyoming Dog Park is members-only, accessed by a registered key fob ($12/yr residents, $24/yr non-residents) you pick up in person at the Parks & Rec office. Every other park here is free and open: Hillcrest, Covell, Remington, Grand Ravines, Whistlestop, and the Downtown Westside lot.
Are Grand Rapids dog parks open in winter?
Yes, but plan for Michigan winter. Seasonal water stations and fountains shut off in the cold months, surfaces are snow-packed or icy, and they get muddy at spring thaw. Grand Ravines shortens to an 8 PM close from mid-October through February. Bring your own water and watch for road salt on paws.
