The Best Dog Parks & Beaches in Columbus

Columbus keeps it free and simple: a solid set of fenced dog parks run by the city, the Metro Parks, and the suburbs, most with separate big- and small-dog sides. Two things are worth knowing. Rocky Fork Metro Park is the standout — it has a fenced dog park plus a rare sanctioned off-leash trail loop, one of the only ones in the system. And the famous dog-swim beaches at Prairie Oaks and Battelle Darby? Those require a leash — they’re dog-swim spots, not off-leash areas — so none of the off-leash parks here have swim water. Expect Midwest mud after rain and snowmelt. Here are the verified off-leash parks, each checked against the official source.

Columbus dog parks & beaches: FAQ

Where can dogs go off-leash in Columbus?
Columbus has a good set of free, fenced dog parks: the city runs Big Walnut (the largest), Godown, Wheeler Memorial, Three Creeks and Spindler Road (Hilliard); the Metro Parks run Scioto Audubon (downtown) and Rocky Fork; and the suburbs add Nando Dog Park (Dublin) and Brooksedge (Westerville). Most split big and small dogs into separate sides.
Can my dog swim off-leash near Columbus?
Not off-leash. The famous dog-swim beaches at Prairie Oaks (Darby Bend Lakes) and Battelle Darby Creek are popular for letting dogs swim, but Metro Parks rules require a 6-foot leash there — they’re leashed dog-swim spots, not off-leash areas. None of the off-leash dog parks in Columbus have swim water, so bring drinking water instead.
Are there off-leash trails in Columbus?
Yes — Rocky Fork Metro Park (near New Albany) has a rare sanctioned 0.3-mile off-leash dog loop trail in addition to its fenced 1.8-acre dog park. It’s one of the only official off-leash trails in the Metro Parks system; the park’s other trails require a 6-foot leash.
Are Columbus dog parks open in winter?
Mostly yes, but plan for Midwest weather: the city parks run 7 AM–11 PM year-round, while the Metro Parks (Scioto Audubon, Rocky Fork) close earlier in winter. Wheeler Memorial closes entirely in winter for turf maintenance, and grass surfaces everywhere get muddy after rain and snowmelt.
Where can my dog be off-leash right now?
Open the live map — each spot shows whether off-leash is allowed at the current date and time, including the seasonal Metro Parks hours and Wheeler’s winter closure.
Can I add a spot?
Yes — open the live map, drop a pin, snap a photo, and it’s on the map for every dog owner.
